Red Yeast Rice

Postby pawstalker » Sat Jan 27, 2007 10:11 pm

Is there any reason why I shouldn't take Red Yeast Rice, to try to lower my cholesterol, while on steroids and thyroid meds? I also take a beta-blocker for palpitations.

Sodium and potassium content are the main dietary concerns related to Addisons that I've heard of. For thyroid meds, best to take them on an empty stomach and also don't take calcium and iron supplements close to when you take your thyroid meds. Haven't heard anything related to red yeast rice related to meds you mentioned. Here are a few links on thyroid med interactions:

If you have a problem with the prescription statin drugs the Red Yeast Rice can cause side effects too. I am unable to take statins and the Red Yeast Rice gave me muscle pains and I imediately stopped using it.
